Teach Tech—Professional Technical Teacher Education Program

According to the U.S. Department of Labor in 2010, national employment of postsecondary technical educators is projected to grow at a faster rate than the average of all occupations.  Washington State Employment, is forecasting a need for nearly 200 of these educators per year over the next several years.  If you are interested in becoming a technical education instructor at the postsecondary level, now is the time to seize this opportunity and advance your career by applying for the Teach Tech Program offered by South Seattle Community College and the Aerospace Joint Apprenticeship Committee (AJAC).

What is Teach Tech?

Teach Tech, also known as the Professional Technical Teacher Education Program, offers people with a two year technical degree the opportunity to upgrade to a bachelor’s degree in technical teaching.  AJAC and South Seattle Community College are partnering to offer this program.  The program will be offered primarily online with monthly meetings in the Seattle area.


Who Can Participate in the Program?

  • Technical Education Instructors who have a two year technical degree, but not a bachelor’s degree in teaching
  • Trades people, who want to be a Technical Education Instructor in industry or at the postsecondary level
  • Anyone working in industry who is interested in sharing their knowledge and skills with the next generation

What are Some of the Courses that Will Be Offered?

  • Workforce Instructional Methods and Materials
  • Technology and Learning
  • Adult Learning
  • Diversity and Globalism in Education

What are the Prerequisites?

  • Two to five years of technical work experience and
  • A Technical Associates Degree or equivalent

Can Credit be Earned for Work and/or Teaching Experience?

Students may receive up to 10 credits for technical work experience and an additional 10 credits for teaching experience.


How Long is the Program?

It typically lasts 15 months.


Where will Classes be Held?

Many of the classes will be conducted primarily online by a South Seattle Community College instructor with a few face to face meetings.


What is Earned at the End of the Program?

  • Bachelor’s of Applied Science (BAS)
  • Washington Professional Technical Instructor’s Certification

What are the Benefits to Earning a Bachelor’s Degree?

  • Potential raise for additional education

  • Chance to become a professional technical educator at community and technical colleges, apprenticeship programs, government, proprietary and other adult training organizations
  • Possibility of obtaining a Master’s Degree (Ability to upgrade to a Master’s Degree varies by university)
