Finishing What You Start

Mickey's Apprenticeship Journey at Orion Industries

An Extra Chance That Changed Everything

For Mickey Stokes, graduating from AJAC’s Industrial Manufacturing Technician apprenticeship wasn’t just about earning a credential. It was about proving to himself, and to others, that even when life takes unexpected turns, it’s possible to keep moving forward.

Mickey works at Orion Industries in Mukilteo, Washington, an aerospace company with a strong mission rooted in opportunity and second chances. Orion intentionally supports individuals who face barriers to employment, whether that’s a lack of experience, gaps in a résumé, or challenges tied to life circumstances. Instead of judging people on paper, they take the time to get to know them.

“Sometimes people just need an extra chance,” Mickey says. “Here, they give people that chance.”

Learning Skills That Matter
Mickey enrolled in AJAC’s Industrial Manufacturing Technician apprenticeship because it aligned closely with the work he was already doing at Orion. The curriculum felt practical and relevant, covering core skills like measurement, math, machine maintenance, and safety.

“I loved the apprenticeship because it was so similar to what I do here,” Mickey explains. “It gave me experience, education, and skills I knew would help my career.”

For Mickey, the apprenticeship reinforced something he already believed. If you want to grow, earn more, and be good at what you do, learning on the job while building technical knowledge is a powerful way to get there.

Continuing Through Life’s Hardest Moments
Partway through his apprenticeship, Mickey’s life changed in a profound way. He became a full-time father to his young son after his son’s mother passed away. Faced with grief and new responsibilities, Mickey had to pause his apprenticeship to focus on putting his life back together.

“It was tough from time to time,” he says. “But you keep moving forward. You try not to focus on the negative parts.”

With support from Orion and AJAC, Mickey was able to step away when he needed to and return when he was ready. That flexibility made all the difference.

“It was nice that I could take some time off, then come back and finish school,” he says. “Finishing made me so happy.”

Leading by Example
Mickey talks proudly about his son, who already loves to build things just like his dad and grandfather. The idea of one day working alongside him is something Mickey holds close.

“I want to get him down the same road I’m in, if that’s what he wants,” Mickey says. “If someday he could work alongside me, that would be wonderful.”

More than anything, Mickey hopes his journey inspires others. Completing his apprenticeship wasn’t easy. There were moments when it felt overwhelming and times when he doubted he would finish. But with support from his workplace, his instructors, and his own determination, he kept going.

“I want to inspire other people to finish what they start,” he says. “Even if something bad happens in your life, keep going. Do something you enjoy. It makes work more special.”

A Career Built on Support and Purpose
Today, Mickey feels grateful for the people who stood by him throughout the process, including his supervisor, his coworkers, and AJAC.

“This whole experience has been wonderful,” he says.

When asked about his biggest accomplishment, Mickey doesn’t hesitate.

“Being a good dad,” he says. “That’s my biggest accomplishment.”
