New short-term apprenticeship program offered by AJAC for entry-level machining or maintenance roles.

New Production Machine Operator Apprenticeship Launches This Spring

Short-Term Apprenticeship for Production & Maintenance

AJAC is thrilled to announce the launch of its new Production Machine Operator apprenticeship program beginning this spring across Washington State.

AJAC has heard from employers seeking a shorter, entry-level apprenticeship that serves as a pathway to advanced occupations like machining and maintenance. The Production Machine Operator program was designed to meet this need, equipping entry-level employees with essential skills without requiring a four-year commitment. This streamlined program combines the most in-demand foundational courses into a single, comprehensive training.

Creating a Future-Ready Workforce

1

Technological Advancements

As automation and advanced manufacturing technologies like CNC machines and robotics become more integrated on the shop floor, manufacturers need operators who can manage and maintain these systems effectively.

2

Industry Diversity

Machine operators are essential across a wide range of industries, including aerospace, automotive, medical, and electronics manufacturing, enabling manufacturers to meet the increasing demand for goods globally.

3

Aging Workforce

With nearly 25% of manufacturing workers aged 55 or older, many experienced operators are nearing retirement. This program helps fill the talent gap by attracting younger talent and facilitating knowledge transfer from retiring employees.

4

Shorter Training Periods

Unlike many technical roles, machine operator positions typically require less time and training, making this occupation accessible to workers seeking upskilling or career changes. This shorter timeframe also benefits employers, who can evaluate an apprentice’s potential before committing to longer-term training programs.

5

Career Exploration

Apprentices will have the chance to identify their strengths and explore future career pathways, whether in maintenance, machining, or other advanced occupations. The program’s structure includes up to three classes that can align with the apprentice’s next steps in the industry.

On-the-Job Training (OJT)

The Production Machine Operator apprenticeship includes a robust on-the-job training component, allowing apprentices to gain hands-on experience under the guidance of seasoned professionals.

This real-world training ensures apprentices develop the technical and problem-solving skills necessary to succeed in dynamic production environments.

College-Level Classes

The RSI component of the program complements the on-the-job training with classroom-based instruction.

These classes provide flexibility to align with an employer’s specific focus, whether machining or maintenance-oriented, ensuring apprentices gain relevant and actionable skills. Classes for this program will be a mix of online and in-person.

Employers have the option to include AJAC’s CNC Set-Up & Operations and/or Electrical Systems classes in-place of two of the six classes mentioned below.

  • Industrial Maintenance & Mechatronics 1
  • Industrial Maintenance & Mechatronics 2
  • Quality Assurance & Inspection
  • Material Science
  • Technical Drawings
  • Lean and 6 Sigma Foundations (Green Belt)

Stackable Apprenticeships

The Production Machine Operator apprenticeship is a stepping stone to more advanced occupations, providing apprentices with a clear pathway for career growth. This program equips apprentices with the foundational skills needed to explore specialized roles in the manufacturing industry, setting them up for long-term success.
