Recently, three AJAC Youth Apprentices and their instructor, Evan Thomas, shared their experiences at the Pierce County Skills Center. Their stories highlight the impact of apprenticeships in shaping career paths and preparing students for the workforce.
Levi Luker: Building a Future in Precision Manufacturing
Levi Luker, an apprentice at Machine Works Inc. in Sumner, Washington, found that the program gave him a clear direction for his future. “I had no idea what I was doing,” Levi admitted. “This really set me up for my future 100%.” His company primarily manufactures parts for the Navy, requiring precise measuring techniques and specialized equipment such as dial calipers, micrometers, and telescoping bore gauges. Under the guidance of his instructor, coworkers, and employer, Levi has gained confidence in his skills and a strong foundation for his career.
Owen Archer: Crafting the Future of Aluminum Structures
Archer, another youth apprentice, works at American Structures & Design in Sumner, where he operates CNC machines to manufacture aluminum railings, balconies, and patio covers. His company plays a vital role in producing structural components seen in apartment buildings and commercial spaces. Through AJAC and additional industry experiences, such as the Boeing internship and Core Plus Aerospace program, Archer has transitioned from a high school mindset to adulthood. “This has helped me grow up, become more mature, and realize what the real world is going to be like,” he shared.
Oscar Ramirez: Mastering CNC Machining
Oscar Ramirez is gaining hands-on experience at MetalTech in Auburn, where he runs CNC machines and ensures parts meet precise tolerances. His company manufactures aerospace components and engages in mass production, requiring expertise in welding, assembly lines, and machining. Oscar’s apprenticeship has exposed him to a variety of processes, making him a versatile and skilled machinist.
Evan Thomas: From Apprentice to Instructor
Evan Thomas, an AJAC graduate and current instructor at the Pierce County Skills Center, understands firsthand the benefits of youth apprenticeships. As a 2018 apprentice at Machinists Inc., he worked on a project that left a lasting legacy—the gears that rotate the renovated Space Needle. “Those parts will be on the Space Needle for the next 100 years,” Evan reflected. “It was all made possible through the opportunity AJAC offered me.” Now, he’s passing on his knowledge to the next generation of skilled workers.
