Building on Experience
Leana already had a decade of shipping experience when she enrolled in AJAC’s Logistics Specialist Apprenticeship. She knew the day-to-day work, but she wanted to understand more of the bigger picture behind the processes and systems she worked with.
The program gave her the opportunity to build on that experience and explore topics such as enterprise resource planning (ERP), Lean Six Sigma, teamwork, and leadership.
Rather than starting over, Leana was able to connect new concepts to the work she already knew and bring that knowledge back to RTCA.
Turning New Skills Into Leadership
For RTCA General Manager Eric Vaughn, Leana’s potential was clear. She had experience organizing and managing the shipping department, but much of her training had happened on the job.
AJAC’s apprenticeship gave Leana a different perspective and helped her build confidence in her abilities. As she progressed through the program, Eric saw her leadership skills develop and new opportunities open up within the company.
That growth continues today. Leana now helps train and mentor members of the shipping team, sharing knowledge and helping others develop their skills.
Her experience is a reminder that professional development doesn’t stop once someone knows how to do their job. With the right training and support, experienced employees can keep growing and take on new responsibilities.
An Investment in Employees
Leana was the first graduate of AJAC’s Logistics Specialist Apprenticeship, making her achievement an important milestone for both her and RTCA.
For employers, apprenticeship offers a structured way to develop the people already on their teams. Employees gain new skills and a deeper understanding of their work, while companies can strengthen their internal talent and prepare employees for future opportunities.
AJAC works with manufacturing employers to deliver registered apprenticeship training that combines classroom instruction with on-the-job learning. Employers provide the workplace experience and mentorship, while AJAC helps structure and manage the apprenticeship program.
Take the Next Step in Your Career
Leana encourages others to take advantage of apprenticeship when the opportunity is available. The knowledge she gained through AJAC helped her see her work differently and gave her skills she could apply to her everyday responsibilities.
Her story demonstrates what’s possible when an employee is ready to grow and an employer is willing to invest in that growth.
Whether you’re a manufacturing employer looking to develop your workforce or a worker interested in building new skills, apprenticeship can be a practical next step.
