Bridging the Skills Gap in Thurston County

AJAC's Manufacturing Academy Launches New Training Program

A Strategic Partnership for Workforce Development

Thurston County, home to nearly 4,300 manufacturing jobs, is facing a critical challenge: a shortage of skilled workers to fill crucial entry-level positions. In response to this pressing need, AJAC (Advanced Manufacturing Apprenticeships) has partnered with the Lacey MakerSpace, Pacific Mountain Workforce Development Council (PacMtn), WorkSource, Thurston County Chamber of Commerce, City of Lacey, and Thurston Economic Development Council to introduce an innovative training initiative.

This new program, funded by WorkSource, will equip adults aged 18 and above with foundational manufacturing skills at no cost, launching on August 19th at the Lacey MakerSpace in Lacey, Washington.

Introducing the Manufacturing Academy: A Pathway to Success

The Manufacturing Academy, designed by AJAC, immerses participants in critical technical skills, including shop math, blueprint reading, and precision measurement. In just four weeks, participants will also earn valuable industry-recognized certifications in forklift operation, OSHA-10 safety training, CPR/First-Aid, and lean manufacturing methodologies. These credentials not only enhance their professional portfolios but significantly boost their employability, positioning them for lucrative careers in advanced manufacturing.

AJAC’s extensive network of manufacturing employers will play a pivotal role in bridging the gap between classroom learning and practical application. Through strategic collaborations, students will be seamlessly connected with career opportunities within the advanced manufacturing industries.

Empowering the Local Workforce

Demetria “Lynn” Strickland, Executive Director at AJAC, expressed enthusiasm about the program’s potential impact, saying, “Our employer partners are delighted to have a fresh stream of talent sourced directly from their own community, straight to the shop floor. These structured training opportunities not only establish and maintain a steady flow of workers for the manufacturing sector but also equip individuals with industry certifications. This enables them to secure family-wage jobs within the county’s thriving advanced manufacturing sectors.”

Albert Rooks, CEO of Small Planet Supply, also highlighted the importance of the Manufacturing Academy for smaller companies in the area: “I’m continually impressed with how much manufacturing training means to a company of our size. We’re a small but growing company, and as we move into new areas requiring different skillsets, each goal becomes more challenging to achieve. As we grow, our success comes from improving skills and knowledge. That way, we don’t win by luck, but by being excellent at what we do. Our access to training from experts gives us the skills and confidence we need to achieve in new ventures. We’re happy to have the opportunity to work with AJAC and Lacey MakerSpace. The Manufacturing Academy provides us meaningful assistance in an easily accessible space.”

Michelle Pope, Director of the Lacey MakerSpace, shares this excitement, stating, “Since launching the Lacey MakerSpace in 2019, we have been committed to providing innovative training opportunities that empower individuals to enhance their skills and pursue their passions. The hands-on learning approach offered by the Manufacturing Academy will be a game-changer for many. We are incredibly proud of this collaboration and excited about the impact it will have on our local industry.”

A Strategic Partnership for Workforce Development

AJAC’s partnership with the Lacey MakerSpace is a strategic move aligned with a collective mission to develop a skilled and adaptable workforce. The Lacey MakerSpace offers a unique environment where innovation, creativity, and hands-on learning converge. Through this collaboration, community members will have access to cutting-edge technology, tools, and resources essential for mastering the skills required in today’s rapidly evolving industries.

This experiential learning approach not only boosts technical proficiency but also fosters problem-solving, critical thinking, and innovation—key competencies for the modern workforce. Together, these organizations are empowering individuals, supporting industries, and building a robust foundation for future economic progress.
